Artist's Statement

As a dance artist, I enjoy exploring dances that bring me personal enjoyment while also serving to communicate my worldview and experiences to an audience. I always want my choreography to serve as a communication between myself and the performers that is then a dialogue with the audience in which the performer serves as a conduit. At the end of a dance work, I thrive on the intersectional discussions that come about from truly meaningful pieces. In my recent explorations, these works and conversations have centered on meaning making within dances that communicate stories- specifically mythological stories.

Dance is a way to explore my world view through movement while also having the opportunity to dance just for the joy it brings me. While I enjoy the academic side of dance for the fact that it allows me to explore and engage with the world around me, I also enjoy the ability to create just for the sake of creating. I have made dances about sensitive topics close to my heart like the loss of a close friend to drug addiction; I have developed dances based solely on the word “ocean;” regardless of the topic however, I have always created, and will always create, dances for the joy of movement.

Persephone’s Departure

This concept shot explores the departure of Persephone from Olympus. Rather than exploring Hesiod’s version in which she is abducted, I chose to explore an intersection between Homer’s older version and Hesiod’s adaptation- she was not stolen, but chose to leave. In this clip, Persephone is exploring the Earth as she searches for the Underworld, seeking freedom from Olympus’ restrictive patriarchy.

Persephone Finds the Underworld

Within this concept shot, Persephone has found the entrance to the Underworld, approaching it with reverence and release… finally being able to enter where she truly wishes to go.
